33 Living by The Golden Rule: When Loving Means Letting Go

Living by the Golden Rule — treat others as you wish to be treated — sounds simple in theory, yet in real life it often asks far more of us than we expect.
This episode of When the Heart Calls, is a reflection on a deeply personal experience after returning to my childhood home to visit my elderly mother. The visit stirred memories of family dynamics that began decades earlier after my father’s death, and the difficult realization that love sometimes means releasing control.
Through honest reflection, the subtle ways ego can shape our expectations of others is explored — even when we believe we are acting out of care or concern. Learning to honor another person’s autonomy, even when their choices are painful to witness, can require grief, humility, and courage.
This conversation becomes an invitation to look inward:
Where might we be projecting our hopes, fears, or expectations onto others?
What does it truly mean to respect another person’s path?
If the Golden Rule asks us to treat others as we wish to be treated, then perhaps it also asks us to allow others the dignity of their journey, their way — just as we seek the freedom to walk our own path.
